The Marvel Cinematic Universe just finished Phase 4 on the big screen with the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and on Disney+ with The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Phase 5 is shaping up nicely, but the recent run of Marvel Comics is sure to have some influence on how the narrative arcs develop next.
Marvel Studios continues to look to source material for story and character inspiration, and 2020, 2021, and 2022 boast some great runs that have helped reshape the universe. These narrative beats are worth exploring and could easily be implemented into the future of the MCU.
King In Black (2020-2021)
King In Black is a major crossover event that took over Marvel Entertainment. The premise sees Knull, the god of the Symbiote, descend upon the known universe. With Earth-616 in his crosshairs, he took over the planet in a way no other villain had managed before.
The MCU has slowly started playing with the idea of the upcoming Symbiotes, especially in the Venom crossover. Considering Phase 5 will certainly feature additional gods, it’s plausible that Knull will soon be introduced; saw his weapon in the hands of Gorr the God Butcher.
Hellfire Gala (2021 and 2022)
The Gala of Hellfire The narrative takes place over two years now, with the event continuing to unfold for the foreseeable future. Already an experienced Sorcerer Supreme for the Dark Dimension, Strange has been an intriguing narrative in seeing how Clea develops into the role. The MCU just introduced the character, and so it could be a brilliant change of pace for him to replace the Doctor in the coming years.
Heroes Reborn (2021)
While there was an original iteration of the Heroes are reborn, the latest variation is the one that could have the biggest impact on the MCU. Phil Coulson made a deal with the devil, with Mephisto altering reality itself to reveal the false heroes of the Squadron Supreme.

Death Of Doctor Strange (2021-2022)
Clea only had to take up the Sorcerer Supreme mantle because of Death of Doctor Strange run in the comic. This is an emotional arc that begins with Strange’s murder and a variant from the timeline that tries to resolve his own death.
It also showed how much Strange really did to stop the forces of darkness, with paranormal disturbances that followed after his death. The MCU will have to move on from this iteration of Strange eventually, and this arc would be a natural one to take inspiration from.
Reign of the Devil (2021-2022)

Reign of the Devil concluded the incredible Daredevil run that featured Wilson Fisk as the Mayor, Matt Murdock in prison, and Elektra as the new Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. It was a fantastic read, culminating in Kingpin’s obsession with learning the truth about Murdock’s alter ego.
It combined the vigilante and street-level side of the Marvel Universe and could very well influence the direction of future Disney+ shows, spinning off the adventures of Echo, Daredevil, the Kingpin, and hopefully returning heroes like Jessica Jones. Shadowland aside, this is the natural path to take.
Empire (2020)
The status of the Marvel Universe’s intergalactic politics has shifted to Empire, a crossover event involving the Kree and the Skrulls as a new Emperor takes over. With Hulking now in a position of power, a new era of peace has been restored throughout the universe.
It’s a story focused on galactic reform and the continued expansion of the cosmic side of the MCU and with Hulking certainly on the way along with the rest of the Young Avengers, there’s a lot to gain from adapting this popular comic book run .
