In 2022, we were all shocked to see war return to continental Europe. These holidays, our thoughts are primarily with the people of Ukraine as they fight for their freedom. So far, Europe’s response to this crisis has been characterized by unity.

Russia’s invasion had effects that affected us all. Especially in relation to the European energy market, which is why we have led calls for a pan-European response that delivers an energy shield for citizens and businesses. The war in Ukraine, combined with the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, has negatively affected the purchasing power of EU citizens. We have developed a food security action plan to alleviate stress in global food supply chains.

At a time when several global players, such as China, and even our closest allies, such as the US, are adopting nationalistic economic policies and deepening trade disputes, the EU must adapt by strengthening trade agreements.

In 2023, we will prioritize the law on semiconductor chips and a new European law on critical raw materials to reduce our dependence on ‘third countries’ – non-EU member states, or those without free movement in the Schengen zone – for resources and products which we will rely on in the future. We will relentlessly argue for a more prosperous and competitive Europe, based on modernity and an awareness of the importance of harnessing the technology of the future.

The EU must strengthen its presence in and partnership with key allies.
