Patti LuPone has joined the cast of the upcoming Marvel series Agatha: Coven of Chaos.

According to Deadline, which broke the story, the legendary actress is believed to be “playing a witch”.

LuPone is best known for her work on stage, winning three Tony Awards and two Olivier Awards. Recently, she has garnered critical acclaim for her various roles in Ryan Murphy’s dramas such as American Horror Story, Pose and Hollywood.

Coven of Chaos will see Kathryn Hahn reprise her WandaVision role as the titular spellcaster Agatha Harkness, alongside Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Emma Caulfield Ford as Sarah Proctor/Dottie Jones.

The cast also includes Joe Locke (Heartstopper), Aubrey Plaza (The White Lotus), Ali Ahn (Supernatural), Maria Dizzia (Orange is the New Black) and Sasheer Zamata (SNL).

Plaza “is believed to be playing a villainous role”, says Deadline, while Ahn and Dizzia are also cast as witches.

Details are scarce on Locke’s role, although rumors suggest he will play Marvel Comics’ most iconic gay superhero, Wiccan, who is also the son of Wanda Maximoff.

The Disney Plus series was confirmed to be in the works in November 2021 with Jac Schaefer, head writer and executive producer at WandaVision, returning in both roles.

Hahn’s character made a memorable debut as Agnes, the charismatic but grumpy neighbor of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany).

It is later revealed that she is a powerful witch called Agatha Harkness who has studied magic for centuries. Enraged by Wanda’s magical prowess, Agatha tries to steal her chaos magic (to no avail).

Coven of Chaos will likely take place after the events of WandaVision, which culminated in Wanda magically trapping Agatha as her intrusive Westview neighbor persona.

It is expected to be released in late 2023.
