The latest news suggests Marvel’s Blade the movie will be more like the original movies, and that’s good news for the MCU. Marvel pushed Blade returned after the film’s original director, Bassam Tariq, was gone, and the studio is now known to have undertaken a page one rewrite. Lovecraft CountryYann’s Yann Demange has now taken over as director, and according to The Hollywood Reporter Sources say that Marvel is now planning a darker and lighter production that “perhaps still finds common shading in the notorious Blade films produced in the early 2000s by New Line.“
Modern audiences are used to Marvel movies being a big deal. It’s easy to forget that this wasn’t the case in the ’90s, however; in fact, Hollywood has been passing on Marvel movies for decades. Blade was the movie that put Marvel on the map, convincing filmmakers that they should take their superheroes seriously. A decade later, Iron Man set the pattern for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but over the past few years there have been criticisms the franchise has become too formulaic. It’s great to see Marvel go back to their roots.
Marvel’s Blade Movies Are Different From The MCU
New Line Blade the films are definitely R-rated, reveling in their gore and violence. Blade imagined an entire vampire society, one that existed in the shadows of the real world and preyed on humans without care or compassion. The film’s opening scenes set the tone, where a vampire takes his chosen victim to a vampire nightclub to party – only for his fun to be interrupted when Blade arrives. This leads to a brutal and bloody action scene, as Blade cuts a bloody blow to the vampires. It doesn’t just stand out because of its violence; in style and tone, it is quite unlike anything Marvel Studios has produced.
What Marvel Studios Can Learn From Blade
Producer Nate Moore recently revealed that Marvel is reluctant to hire comic book fans as writers, and Blade shows why that’s a smart move. The comic book character never had the kind of impact that more popular superheroes have seen, and so the script took a completely different approach – one that the comics would actually emulate, with their version of Blade once again designed to look more like star Wesley Snipes. Marvel’s current problems are a step further, however, as the studio needs to allow their writers and directors the opportunity to throw out their own rulebook, not just the lore from the comics. Marvel needed to give Demange — and Emmy-nominated writer Michael Starrbury, who was also brought on board — complete freedom to do something truly unique.
The latest reports suggest that Marvel is aiming to create a unique MCU Blade movie, one that addresses the history of the franchise rather than simply introducing another superhero into the MCU. Marvel has shied away from such opportunities in the past, but hopefully this means the studio is getting bolder after the critical success of Werewolf Of The Night Disney+ feature presentation. Hopefully it won’t be long before there are more exciting updates about Marvel’s Blade.
