Aizawl: The opposition Congress lawmaker, Lalrindika Ralte, requested the Prime Minister’s intervention Narendra Modi to solve the problems faced by areca growers in Mizoram due to rampant smuggling of Burmese areca nuts across the state.

In a letter to the Prime Minister on Monday, Ralte said that there has been a lot of illegal import of dried areca nuts from neighboring Myanmar and other places through the porous border in eastern Mizoram.

Although the Center directed the governments of Mizoram and Manipur to prevent illegal importation of areca nuts, “the way the Mizoram government reacted to this unhealthy situation was very pathetic and short of expectations from a state government.” Ralte said.

Ralte, who was elected from Hachhek constituency in Mizoram’s western Mamit district, said his constituency is the largest areca nut producing area in the state, where about 70 percent of residents depend on areca nut cultivation for their livelihood. to live for decades. While the Assam government is doing its best to prevent the illegal entry of areca into the neighboring state, law enforcement agencies have not been able to distinguish between Burmese areca nuts and those grown in Mizoram leading to major market problems for local farmers, he said.

The Congress leader asked the Prime Minister to take stock of the situation and make necessary efforts to stop smuggling of areca nuts from Myanmar and also to clear marketing channels for Mizoram farmers.
