Avengers vs X-Men saw two of Marvel’s greatest superhero teams go head-to-head, but the first official AvX was definitely more heartbreaking.

The Marvel Comics event Avengers vs X-Men is one of the most groundbreaking storylines to date as it pits two of the greatest superhero teams in all of comic book fiction against each other in an epic showdown for the ages, though many may not know that this is not the first ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’ in Marvel Comics history–and the first one was definitely more heartbreaking.

In 2012’s Avengers vs. X-Men, the Avengers learn that the Phoenix Force is returning to Earth, and its new host is likely Hope Summers. Hope Summers is the first mutant born after M-Day, and is often referred to as the mutant messiah–and it seems to the Avengers that she’s about to fulfill a cosmic purpose, even if they fear it could mean the end of the world . So, the Avengers approach the X-Men in an effort to bring Hope to them and keep her under their supervision, though at this point in the shared universe, the X-Men aren’t too trusting. It wasn’t that long ago that nearly every agency on Earth was after Hope when she was a baby given her mutant status following M-Day, so there’s no way the X-Men are going to give her up now just because of the Avengers. he thought he might be a threat if the Phoenix even came back. Thus, this disagreement leads to violent conflict, sparking an all-out war between the Avengers and the X-Men as both sides fight for what they believe is right.

In Avengers #53 by Roy Thomas and John Buscema, the Avengers are approached by Angel for help after the X-Men are captured by the villain Magneto. With Magneto recently regaining control of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch–both recently Avengers themselves–Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are happy to help. When they reach Magneto’s base of operations, however, things start to go awry. For starters, Cyclops doesn’t believe the Avengers are who they say they are when they try to save him, and he fights the Avengers all by himself. Later, when Cyclops reunites with his fellow X-Men while still imprisoned in Magneto’s fortress, he realizes the error of his ways–but by then, it’s too late.

First Avengers vs X-Men Started by Magneto Against the Heroes’ Wills

Marvel's first Avengers vs X-Men explained.

Bringing together the Avengers and the X-Men inside his base is all part of Magneto’s villainous plan as he has a device that will allow him to warp the minds of those he uses it and do the these at his command. So, Magneto uses this device on the X-Men and forces them to fight the Avengers–and so begins the first Marvel’s Avengers vs. X-Men. What’s heartbreaking about this story compared to the more popular version is that, here, neither the X-Men nor the Avengers have a say in their actions. In fact, Magneto makes them do the exact opposite of what they want to do. Just as the X-Men recognize the Avengers as fellow heroes, Magneto takes that thought away from them and forces the team to fight the Avengers. In 2012’s Avengers vs. X-Menthe two teams are no less fighting for what they view as right, but in the original version, they are just puppets who can kill or be killed without any say in the matter.

When its subtitle Avengers read the issue”Avengers vs. X-Men“, readers know it’s going to be a fun comic–though a story of unsettling feelings. While this official ‘Avengers vs X-Men‘ comic is a shorter and generally less impactful than the 2012 event, it’s certainly more poignant as it presents Marvel Comics‘ the greatest heroes are stripped of their free will and forced to fight each other instead of exercising their right to fight for what they believe in.
