The MCU is heading towards Avengers: Secret Wars, meaning Marvel Studios can’t ignore its biggest multiverse story yet. Then Avengers: Endgame saw all of the Avengers as well as countless other Marvel characters join forces for a massive battle against Thanos in what is currently the second-highest-grossing film of all time, it became clear that the MCU will need the multiverse if it wants to create similarly epic-scale stories in future sagas. Spider-Man: No Way Home may be the most ambitious Marvel multiverse crossover to date, but when it comes to the rules and possibilities of the multiverse concept, it’s a very self-contained story. Like this, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness used the multiverse concept to bring names like Professor Xavier and Reed Richards into the MCU before the actual debuts of the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. Then Endgame, Loki introduced some of the rules and tricks of the MCU multiverse. What if…? The MCU’s Multiverse is revealed

However, how Loki combining the concepts of time travel, alternate realities, and the multiverse into one, the show focuses more on how various actions lead to the creation of new timelines than the multiverse itself. That said, end of Loki season 1 set up a more chaotic multiverse for the MCU shows and movies to explore. Sylvie kills He Who Remains and leads to the creation of endless new timelines, one thing What if…? then has to be unveiled.
The first eight What if…? each episode visits a different universe from the main MCU – where many things are similar, but some are very different. Inspired by a Marvel Comics imprint of the same name, What if…? combines the MCU’s multiverse lore with something that both Marvel and DC have been doing in comics for decades – exploring different scenarios outside of the main canon. Each one What if…? The episode posed questions for viewers, from “What If… Captain Carter Was The First Avenger?” in “What If…The Watcher Broke His Curse?”. In just one season, What if…? presented more important universes than other MCU multiverse stories.

What if…?, on the other hand, devoted entire episodes to each of its new universes, with the final episode serving as the culmination of all previous eight stories. Whereas No Way Home and Doctor Strange 2 used the multiverse primarily as a plot device to bring in legacy characters such as Tobey Maguire’s previous Spider-Man and Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, What if…? is a show about the multiverse itself. So also What if…?The main character of The Watcher and not an Avenger.
What if…? Canon? It’s complicated
This can be difficult to discuss What if…?‘s canon status when all nine What if…? episodes feature alternate universes from the MCU. However, a simpler answer to that question is that What if…? is canon in the MCU multiverse. None of the events of What if…? directly affected the main MCU timeline, at least for now, but each of those universes exists somewhere in the MCU multiverse. Beyond the multiverse rules, what really helps define What if…? as canon is the fact that it was made by Marvel Studios. Before releasing the What if…? season 1, head writer AC Bradley confirmed that What if…? is canon (by IGN).
That said, how the MCU will embrace the animated shows in its canon is still up for grabs. X-Men 97a revival of the classic X-Men: The Animated Series, was made by Marvel Studios for Disney + but it is unlikely to be MCU canon in how it will continue the story of the original X-Men show. Another example is Marvel Zombiesa What if…? spinoff set in the zombie alternate universe and not the MCU’s Earth-616. Finally, Spider-Man: Freshman Year Apparently it will be set in the MCU, but will instead follow an alternate version of the MCU’s Spider-Man where Norman Osborn plays a role in the story.
Doctor Strange 2 May Have Recognized What If…? (But Chosen Not)
The biggest question mark about What if…?Its importance in the MCU is included Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While Spider-Man: No Way Home look at the multiverse through the lens of Spider-Man’s life, Doctor Strange 2 is expected to be the most ambitious project of the Marvel multiverse – it is the “Multiverse of Madness” after all. Because of this, many have assumed that Doctor Strange 2 will revisit or at least refer to some of the universes presented in What if…?. Those theories became more popular once an evil version of Doctor Strange resembled What if…?Strange Supreme appears at first Multiverse of Madness trailer.
It seems only natural that the evil Doctor Strange enters Doctor Strange 2 is the same version that audiences were introduced to a few months earlier What if…?. From its Evil Strange look to Benedict Cumberbatch’s delivery, everything points to a What if…? character making their jump to live-action. Also, Captain Carter’s shield appeared in one of the finals Doctor Strange 2 TV spots. If Captain Carter was inside Doctor Strange 2then it is easy to assume that it is the same Captain Carter from What if…?. However, neither Evil Strange nor Captain Carter is the same version from What if…?.
Even if the multiverse is big enough to have multiple identical versions of the same character, that’s surprising Doctor Strange 2 chose not to feature any live-action versions of a What if…? character. What if…? is said to be the origin of the Captain Carter stories and Strange Supreme, meaning audiences will already have a particular connection to these multiversal characters. Obviously, where the stories of Strange Supreme and Captain Carter ended What if…? is not what it is Doctor Strange 2 required, but adjustments can be made. In other words, Marvel had the opportunity to mention its biggest multiverse story in a live-action movie, but chose not to.
What if…? Marvel’s Best Secret Wars Set-Up
The Multiverse Saga of the MCU builds on Secret Wars, which in the comics refers to two versions of a major crossover event that saw the fate of the multiverse at stake. It is safe to assume that the of the MCU Secret Wars borrow more from 2015 Secret Wars comic book arc than in 1984, as the former was more ambitious and consistent than the latter. If Doctor Doom shows up Avengers: Secret Wars it’s hard to say, especially since Kang the Conqueror will fight the Avengers while Doom has yet to be introduced to the MCU.
However, Avengers: Secret Wars other elements can be adapted from Secret Wars comics, including Battleworld. In the comics, Battleworld was built from what was left of several universes that were destroyed due to the Incursions. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduced the concept of Incursions to the MCU, meaning it’s easier for Avengers: Secret Wars to feature Battleworld. Instead of the untold facts being part of the Battleworld, Secret Wars can use universes from What if…? season 1 and 2 as the fallen realities that make up Battleworld. Undo that Doctor Strange 2the mistake and acknowledges Marvel’s richest multiverse story.
