Monica Rambeau, the superhero Photon, has a particular fear in the Marvel Universe: thalassophobia.
Written by Eve L. Ewing and drawn by Luca Maresca and Ivan Fiorelli, a preview of Monica Rambeau: Photon #1 reveals that Monica used to be afraid of the ocean. His narration tells the reader, “I know, right? There’s no truth,” explaining why the fear is ridiculous for him being from New Orleans and could be electromagnetic energy. He continues to discuss the energy within the ocean before he is seen flying near its waves.

Created by writer Roger Stern and artist John Romita Jr., Monica Rambeau first appeared in the 1982’s The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16. Her time spent in the Marvel Universe saw Monica use a variety of identities, including Captain Marvel, Photon, Pulsar and Spectrum, one of her new monikers. Monica Rambeau: Photon is set to be a five-issue miniseries where the hero must reach new heights with his energy abilities for a new mission.
Photon Is A Thunderbolt Before His Solo Series
This isn’t the first Marvel miniseries Monica has been involved with in 2022, although it does bring her back the title of “Photon.” Previously, while still using the name “Spectrum,” he served as a member of the new Thunderbolts team led by Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye in Thunders miniseries by writer Jim Zub and artist Sean Izaakse. Set after the events of Marvel’s Reign of the Devil event, the recent one Thunders The title launched its first issue in late August, and will release its fifth and final issue on December 28.
Where Monica Rambeau Appears in the MCU
Monica’s solo miniseries and appearances in Thunders came at a time when he was about to be seen as a superhero on the big screen. In Captain Marvel (2019), fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe were introduced to a young Monica Rambeau played by actor Akira Akbar, but later met the grown-up character on Disney+’s WandaVision series, portrayed by actor Teyonah Parris. The show gave Monica her superpowers, and Parris’ Rambeau is set to return in the upcoming The miracles movie scheduled to hit theaters on July 28, 2023.
Monica Rambeau: Photon #1 came earlier. With Ewing, Maresca and Fiorelli, the issue was colored by Carlos Lopez and lettered by VC’s Clayton Cowles. The main cover art for the book was done by Lucas Werneck, with various cover artwork contributed by Brian Stelfreeze, Karen S. Darboe, Chris Peter, Mateus Manhanini, Norm Breyfogle, Dean White and Peach Momoko. The issue goes on sale December 14 from Marvel Comics.
