Quentin Tarantino Says Marvel Killed The Movie Star | Popgen Tech

Jennifer Aniston made headlines at the beginning of November when she declared, “There are no more movie stars.” It’s a statement Quentin Tarantino agrees with, as evidenced by the director’s recent interview on the “2 Bears, 1 Cave” podcast (via Mediaite). Tarantino attributed the loss of movie stars to the “Marvel-ization of Hollywood.”

“Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is… you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters,” Tarantino said. “But they are not movie stars. right? Captain America is the hero. Or Thor is the hero. I mean, I’m not the first person to say that. I think it’s been said a zillion times…but it’s like, you know, it’s the franchise characters that become a star.

For Tarantino, Captain America is the hero and not Chris Evans. “I didn’t even bring them down, to tell you the truth,” the director said earlier about movie stars who no longer exist en masse. “But that’s one of the — the legacy of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood movies.”

Tarantino also made it clear in the interview that he doesn’t “hate” Marvel movies but dislikes them for being the only product Hollywood is interested in making these days.

“Look, I used to collect Marvel comics like crazy when I was a kid,” Tarantino said. “There is an aspect that if these films had come out when I was in my twenties, I would have been very happy and absolutely loved them. I mean, they weren’t the only films to be made. They were those films among others more movies. But, you know, I’m almost 60, so yeah. No, I’m not too excited about them.”

“My only ax to grind against them is that they are the only things that seem to be done,” he added. “And they’re the only things that seem to cause any sort of stir among a fan base or even for the studio that’s making them. That’s what makes them happy. And that’s just the fact that they’re the whole representation of this era of movies now. There’s really no room for anything else. That’s my problem.”

Don’t expect Tarantino to get involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The director said earlier this month that he would not lead a Marvel film because “you have to be a hired hand to do those things. I’m not a hired hand. I’m not looking for a job.”
